Northern Zone deer hunting in the Adirondacks and the farm country of western New York both reward a light rifle that comes up fast. For a young hunter or anyone smaller in build, the Fierce Firearms Mini Rogue family offers a carbon stock sized to fit, with a bolt action that suits the state's rifle counties.

Fierce designed the line for youth, women and smaller-framed hunters. The stock is carbon fiber with a shorter length of pull and an adjustable comb or push-button cheek piece. Dual-lug actions, adjustable triggers and 18 to 22 in barrels make a handy rifle for walking ridges in the Southern Tier or sitting a stand in the North Country. Some counties restrict rifle use for deer, so check where you hunt. Calibers include 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 and 308.

6mm Creedmoor is known for flat trajectories and low recoil, a combination that suits varmints, predators and deer at sensible ranges.

Fierce builds the Carbon Mini Rogue on its stainless steel two-lug action. A short 70-degree bolt throw keeps the scope clear, and the Bix'n Andy Dakota trigger can be adjusted to suit the shooter.

This rifle has a 20 in barrel, 4+1 capacity, and weighs about 5.8 lb. Finish: Sonora Carbon Ambush Camo.

In the Adirondack hardwoods, a running buck gives a hunter seconds. A stock with the right length of pull lets a smaller shooter mount quickly without the scope catching on a jacket collar. Tune the comb so the eye lands in the center of the scope every time. For the first season, 6.5 Creedmoor is gentler to learn on than 308.
